Gum Leaf Blowing Competition
Australian's will make a competition out of anything, such as in the case of the Gum Leaf Blowing Competition, first held in 1976. The event is held during the annual Golden Wattle festival in Maryborough, Queensland. The contestants are required to "blow" tunes using only leaves freshly picked from the branches of the Australian native gum tree. The first winner was Wally French an 82 year old New South Welshman. Past winners have played tunes such as Mockingbird Hill, Waltzing Matilda, Home on the Range, Are You Lonesome Tonight? and The Wild Colonial Boy.
