The commentator actually predicted that this would happen. Maybe he knew that the pole was old and Dan would push it too far.

This is relatively common and part of the risk that pole vaulters face every day. You wouldn’t catch me running flat out, sticking a long pole into the ground and then being projected five meters into the air.
